FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does company incorporation take in Sri Lanka? +

Timelines depend on the type of entity, the completeness of your documentation, and current processing times at the Registrar of Companies and other relevant authorities. Because this varies from case to case, we don’t quote a fixed turnaround here — get in touch with your specific requirements and we’ll give you a realistic estimate.

Do you work with foreign investors and overseas businesses? +

Yes. We regularly assist foreign investors and foreign-owned businesses establishing, operating or investing in Sri Lanka, including branch and liaison office setup, BOI-related registrations, and ongoing corporate, legal and compliance support. Many of our services can be delivered remotely.

Can you handle our accounting and legal work together? +

Yes — this is a core part of how Fortis works. We provide corporate, legal, HR, accounting, tax and compliance services under one roof, so you can coordinate with a single provider instead of managing several separate firms.

What kinds of clients does Fortis work with? +

We work with SMEs and established local businesses, startups and entrepreneurs, foreign investors and foreign-owned businesses, corporates and larger businesses, individuals and professionals, and listed companies and regulated-sector businesses. Our approach is tailored to the size, requirements and stage of each client.

Where in Sri Lanka do you operate? +

We serve clients across Sri Lanka, with a strong presence in Colombo and the Western Province. We also support foreign investors and overseas businesses establishing, operating or investing in Sri Lanka. Many of our services can be delivered remotely, regardless of your location.

What is a monthly legal retainer, and is it right for my business? +

A monthly retainer gives your business ongoing access to legal support — corporate, commercial, contractual, employment and compliance matters — without needing to engage us separately for every requirement. It suits businesses that need regular legal input but don’t require a full-time in-house lawyer. Retainers can be capped or uncapped depending on your needs; contact us to discuss what would suit your business.

Can you draft employment contracts and HR policies for our business? +

Yes. We prepare employment contracts, HR policies and employee handbooks, and support recruitment and onboarding documentation, EPF/ETF compliance, and general employment advisory as part of our HR & Employment Services.

We already have a contract drafted — can you just review it before we sign? +

Yes. Our contract review and vetting service covers exactly this — we review agreements before signature, flag legal and commercial risk, and suggest amendments to protect your interests.

Fortis is a newly established firm — what experience does the team bring? +

Fortis Corporate Services was established as a firm in 2025, but our team brings over 30 years of combined professional experience across legal, corporate and business practice, including having incorporated 30+ companies. We combine legal knowledge with a practical, business-focused approach.
